Marker Text: By 1855, settlers in the nearby Knoxville Community of Cherokee County had formed a church that served several denominations. When the railroad bypassed Knoxville in the early 1870s, many area residents moved to Troup, then spelled Troupe, to have access to the line. By 1873, a small Methodist congregation was meeting in Troup; by 1875, it was part of a preaching circuit, with pastors serving it and other area churches. In 1880, the congregation built its first sanctuary and bought a parsonage. In 1914, the growing church dedicated its present sanctuary. More than 130 years after its formation, the Troup congregation continues to serve its community.(2003)
