The First Cemetery of Athens, the official cemetery of the City of Athens opened in 1837 and is the oldest cemetery of modern-day Athens. It is a who's who of prominent Greek citizens and foreigners as well. Many of the grave markers have neoclassical and Romantic styles with striking beautiful sculptures and magnificent tombs.
The cemetery includes impressive tombs for historical figures such as Heinrich Schliemann, the archaeologist first excavated the ancient city of Troy, philanthropist George Averoff, and actress, singer, and politician Melina Mercouri.
