Carmen Jolicoeur
Born in Costa Rica, Jolicoeur's family came to Montreal in 1930, where Jolicoeur studied ballet and performed with a company for several years. In 1948 the Spanish Government offered her a bursary to travel to Spain and study Spanish dance. Jolicoeur developed a great aptitude for flamenco dancing and began performing in Europe. She returned to Canada in the 1950's, first living in Montreal, then Ottawa, teaching and performing in both cities. Jolicoeur was the first performer and teacher of spanish dance in Canada. The statue atop her gravestone in the Joy of Dance by D.E. McDermott.
