The Triton Fountain depicts three Tritons holding up a shallow bronze bowl. The Tritons are set on a 120' diameter, circular, travertine base. Tritons are mythical demigods of the sea with the lower part of his body like that of a fish. They are the sons of Amphitrite and Poseidon. They are guardians of the fish and other creatures of the sea.
The fountain was designed by Maltese designer Victor Anastasi and created by Maltese sculptor Chevalier Vincent Apap. The fountain was completed in 1959.
The fountain fell into disrepair. In February 2017 the bronze Triton figures were dismantled and sent to Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry in Florence to be cleaned. A steel structure has been built inside the figures to support the weight of the plate, and each figure is was painted in the orignal shade of blue. The restored Triton figures were sent back to Malta and reinstalled in August 2017.
