EN The Franciscan friars arrived in Avignon during the life of Saint Francis of Assisi in the 12th century. They are called shoemakers in reference to the rope that holds their tunic. The church was built in the 13th century, but has been renovated on several occasions, and what we see today dates back to the 17th century. It is a Renaissance style, but quite simple, as the Franciscan ideology requires. There are no ostentatious decorations or many paintings inside, just a place of worship.
12 monks live in the community, which was much larger at the time of the Popes of Avignon
