The tall pink granite monument is within the historic South Head General Cemetery, which commenced in the late 1800's. There are multiple inscriptions on the base of the Broken Column memorial, with Louis Haig's on the eastern side of the base being for the earliest demise. [Though 'Option B' may be the correct reason for this memorial]

Sacred to the Memory of
+
|
Louis Haigh
Who died at Liverpool
on the
12th of February 1890
aged 46
Victor L.B. Haigh who died 19th of August 1924. aged 41 [Buried at Camden]
"There the wicked cease from troubling and there the weary be at rest."

and his wife

Leila Marion nee Rouse who died 13th August 1969.

This above inscription is on the eastern side of the base. In humble hindsight it is possible that all of the present inscriptions were engraved right before it was placed; rather than being chronologically engraved. Other sides have further inscriptions, with the southern side as follows:

Also of
Rosa Haigh Roucier
who died at St Cloud, Paris
on the 12th June 1910
aged 54
and of
D'Emile Eugene Roucier who died at Rose Bay, Sydney. on the 22nd June 1911 aged ?58?

Ruth Freiderichds nee Haigh who died ??? Gladys Rose Harmans nee Haigh who died ?7th? Feb 1965

On another side (western) of the granite base is the following inscription:

Also of
Victor Bosker
"At Rest"
and of
Emilie Salome P. widow of John Bosker of Soubaix, France and Mother of the above.
The end was peace

Option B:
On the fourth side (North) is another inscription, which may be, I admit the true reason for the Broken Column, with the engraving as follows:

In Memory of
Vera Henrietta Bedeau
nee Haigh
who died at Tours, France.
The 12th August 1915 aged 26.
Buried at Neuilly, Paris.
