This bee hotel provides shelter, nesting and overwintering spots for your many native species of solitary bees and other beneficial insects too!
During the warmer months, you may spot bees zipping in and out of the bee hotel as they gather and place materials, such as tiny pieces of leaves and mud, to build their nests and provide food for their young. Each of these holes in this structure can contain several insect eggs, each separated by chambers made from the nesting material.
If you decide to build one yourself, you can use hollow plant stems or bamboo stakes in addition to using wooden blocks with drilled holes. Ensure there is a back board for protection from the elements and drill holes of varying sizes to accommodate our different sized bees.
You'll notice that the structure is close to flowering plants. Bee hotels should always be 30 metres or less from blooms so insects have a source of nectar and pollen that provide food and energy. It's also important that the structure face east, in a spot that is lightly shaded throughout the day and with a clear open entrance rather than covered with vegetation since morning sun exposure is important for warming insect flight muscles...
