The Griffith Observatory has been a landmark in Los Angeles since it's opening in 1935. It recently underwent a five year restoration and expansion project that preserved the building's unique architecture along with many of the exhibits that have become favorites of Angelenos over seven decades, while providing new state of the art exhibits and a major upgrade to the world famous planetarium. The observatory houses the 12-inch Zeiss refracting telescope which more people have looked through than any other telescope in the world. The observatory has a coelostat that tracks the sun and provides the solar image to three solar telescopes.
The Observatory is owned by the City of Los Angeles and its primary purpose is educational. The observatory is opened to the public:
Weekdays (Tuesday-Friday)
Open Noon - 10:00 p.m.
Weekends (Saturday-Sunday)
Open 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
There is no admission charge, but due to the increase in visitors following the renovation, reservations are required. More information is available at the official observatory website.
