" Fondée en 1059 par Roger II de Montgomery, vicomte d’Hiémois et comte de Shrewsbury, l’abbaye de Troarn, était un vaste ensemble architectural, comprenant l’église gothique, les bâtiments conventuels et administratifs (salle capitulaire, cloître, réfectoire, dortoir, cellier, cuisines, chauffoir, infirmerie…) entourés de jardins et les bâtiments à usage économique et agricole, granges, celliers, pressoirs, écuries, bergeries et poulaillers…
L’abbaye connut son apogée du XIe au XIVe, avec 44 moines. Elle était la plus riche du diocèse de Bayeux après Saint-Etienne de Caen « de quelque côté que le vent vente, Troarn a rente. » L’abbaye tirait ses ressources des dimes, dons, aumônes et profits des marais, des moulins, des pêcheries, des foires, du marché, des halles…
A la fin du XVe, l’abbaye, mise en commende, décline. Assiégée par les anglais pendant la guerre de cent ans, elle est pillée, brûlée, puis saccagée par les protestants en 1562 pendant les guerres de religion. Dévastée, elle fut réparée au XVIIe et XVIIIe et agrandie d’un logement pour le prieur, d’une grange et d’un pressoir.
En 1786 l’abbaye est démembrée, puis vendue comme bien national en 1792, et utilisée pour empierrer la route entre Troarn et Saint-Samson.
Les bâtiments agricoles encore visibles sur les cartes postales du début du XXe ont tous disparu et il ne reste plus que l’infirmerie devenue maison d’habitation et le magnifique bâtiment qui abritait la cuisine, des appartements et la bibliothèque.
L’aumônerie se trouve maintenant à l‘entrée du bourg et la porte de l’abbaye à l’entrée de Barneville la Campagne. "

The abbey knew its apogee from the 11th to the 14th century, with 44 monks. She was the richest of the diocese of Bayeux after Saint-Etienne de Caen "on whatever side the wind sale, Troarn rent. At the end of the 15th, the abbey, put in command, declines. Besieged by the English during the Hundred Years War, it was looted, burned and ransacked by Protestants in 1562 during the wars of religion. Devastated, it was repaired in the seventeenth and eighteenth and enlarged housing for the prior, a barn and a wine press.
In 1786 the abbey was dismembered and sold as national property in 1792, and used to stone the road between Troarn and Saint-Samson.
The agricultural buildings still visible on the postcards of the early twentieth have all disappeared and there remains only the infirmary became a residential house and the magnificent building that housed the kitchen, apartments and the library.
The chaplaincy is now at the entrance of the village and the gate of the abbey at the entrance of Barneville la Campagne. "
