FR Le palais du Roure ou « hôtel de Baroncelli-Javon », est un hôtel particulier d’Avignon construit au xve siècle, aujourd’hui transformé en musée.

En 1469, un gibelin Pierre Baroncelli, originaire de Florence, acquiert à Avignon une taverne appelée "La Taverne du Mûrier" et des maisons avoisinantes qu'il transforme pour établir sa demeure. Proches du légat Julien della Rovere (pape de 1503 à 1513 sous le nom de Jules II), les Baroncelli deviennent une famille importante d'Avignon.

Au xixe siècle, cet édifice appelé alors « hôtel de Baroncelli-Javon » est surnommé par Frédéric Mistral qui le fréquente, « palais du Roure » c'est-à-dire palais du chêne ; propriété du marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon, il devient à cette époque un foyer du félibrige. En 1908, le Palais est vendu, puis après avoir subi des préjudices considérables, sauvé en 1918 par Jeanne de Flandreysy qui décide d’y créer un foyer de culture méditerranéenne.

En 1936, à la suite du mariage de Jeanne avec le commandant Émile Espérandieu, archéologue et membre de l'Institut, cette institution acquiert une renommée plus grande avec la création de la Fondation Flandreysy-Espérandieu dont la ville d’Avignon hérite en 1944. Aujourd’hui, les collections de ce musée, organisées sur l'histoire et la sociologie régionale, sont accessibles au public.

Le palais est classé au titre des monuments historiques par arrêté du 19 novembre 1941

Le cadran solaire
A l'intérieur de la cours, on peu voir ce cadran solaire visiblement restauré.
Michel Lalos nous apprend qu'il s'agit d'un cadran déclinant de l'après-midi, gravé sur pierre, lignes chiffrées en bout, en arc-de-cercle, demies de style robuste avec jambe, terminé par une fleur de lys. Le cadran date de 1941 et sa devise, "JE REVIENDRAY", est à double sens car lors d'une visite à Avignon (4/12/1940), le maréchal Pétain avait déclaré "Je reviendrai". La devise y fait allusion, elle peut aussi s'interprêter avec le retour du soleil !

La sculpture du taureau En entrant dans le bâtiment pour gagner la cours intérieure, on passe devant cette sculpture du "Taureau", oeuvre de Carmen Stahlschmidt en 2005.
EN The Palais du Roure, or "Hôtel de Baroncelli-Javon", is a private mansion in Avignon built in the 15th century and now transformed into a museum.

In 1469, a Pierre Baroncelli gibelin, originally from Florence, acquired a tavern in Avignon called "La Taverne du Mûrier" and neighbouring houses, which he transformed to establish his residence. Close to Legate Julien della Rovere (Pope from 1503 to 1513 under the name of Julius II), the Baroncelli became an important family in Avignon.

In the nineteenth century, this building, then called "hôtel de Baroncelli-Javon", was nicknamed by Frédéric Mistral who frequented it, "palais du Roure", i. e. palace of the oak tree; owned by the Marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon, it became at that time a home for the félibrige. In 1908, the Palace was sold, then after suffering considerable damage, saved in 1918 by Jeanne de Flandreysy who decided to create a home of Mediterranean culture there.

In 1936, following Jeanne's marriage to Commander Émile Espérandieu, archaeologist and member of the Institute, this institution acquired a greater reputation with the creation of the Flandreysy-Espérandieu Foundation, which the city of Avignon inherited in 1944. Today, the museum's collections, organized on regional history and sociology, are accessible to the public.

The palace is classified as a historic monument by decree of 19 November 1941

The sundial
Inside the courtyard, you can see this visibly restored sundial.
Michel Lalos tells us that it is a declining afternoon dial, engraved on stone, lines numbered at the end, in a arc-de-circle, half robust style with leg, finished with a fleur-de-lis. The dial dates from 1941 and its motto, "I REVIENDRAY", is a two-way street because during a visit to Avignon (4/12/1940), Marshal Pétain declared "I will return". The motto refers to it, it can also be interpreted with the return of the sun!

As you enter the building to reach the inner courtyard, you pass in front of this sculpture of the "Taurus", created by Carmen Stahlschmidt in 2005.
