"Located to the south-east of the castle, near the Saint-Sulpice district, it connects Ville-Basse and Ville-Close, connecting the streets of Le Bouteiller and de la Fourchette.
The current Porte Notre-Dame was built in 1477 on the site of old mills. It replaces an older gate of the same name, located further east and pierced at the bottom of the redan which still animates the southern wall of the city. Formerly protected to the south-east by the pond of Roulard, always preceded by an arm of the Nançon, this defensive work became the Porte de la Convention during the revolutionary period.
Housed between the Tour de Pléguen (14th century) and the Tower of La Trémoille (15th century), the Porte Notre-Dame is pierced in a wall in large device. This is a double entrance, combining carriage door and round door, this last small gate, right lintel, being located to the left of the main opening.
The work is preceded today by a stone bridge, come replaced two drawbridges of which three long vertical grooves still attest to the existence.
Above the main entrance, a rectangular niche, flanked by two small columns bearing an arched arch of a trilobal scalloped and highlighted by an archivolte with curly cabbage, contains since 1994 a reproduction of a Virgin and Child of the XIVth century classified in 1919.
The original, terracotta, broken during its removal in 1990, has since been restored and stored in a safe place by the City. The Notre-Dame Gate is crowned with machicolations whose lintels, adorned with simulated trefoil arches, are supported by consoles with three projections. Crenellations, partially ruined nowadays, complete the defense of the Porte which was not equipped with a portcullis. "
