"The tract of land that would encompass Savannah, TN was given to Mr. Hardin, for whom the county is named. The Hardin Tract was partially purchased by James W. Irwin who donated 50 acres to the city of Savannah. The city of Savannah then gave Mr. Irwin his choice in lots and sold the other lots to interested buyers. The district as a whole started out as homesteads for the Walker, Williams, Irwin, Sevier, Churchwell, and Ross families. These families were major contributing families to the city of Savannah as bankers, lawyers, teachers, and civic duty personnel. The original families that started the district were mostly related to one another or had business partnerships within the city. The families started to split the lots for other family members to acquire land and build their homes close to the nuclear family. By the time the 1930s rolled around, most of the homesteads were split to the current division of lots and started to be sold outside the original families that lived in the district. Between 1930 and 1958 most of the households were owned by newcomers to Savannah or second and third generation family members (twice removed at the most) were living in the neighborhood." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
