The East Coast Railway Line in Scotland between Edinburgh and Aberdeen, turns inland around four miles from the coast to the north of Montrose, and crosses the River North Esk on the Aberdeenshire (formerly Kincardineshire) and Angus border, at Marykirk via a thirteen span viaduct as it curves to the west of the village.
Built by the Caledonian Railway in 1849, the stone piers originally supported timber arches and were replaced by cast-iron steel trusses around 1880.
It is possible to view the viaduct at close quarters via a path which leads from the B974 road heading west from the village, reaching the river bank underneath the viaduct on the Aberdeenshire side (north side) of the river.
