You can reach this scenic viewpoint on a short walk departing from Whakapapa Village, after crossing the Whakapapa Stream footbridge above the MotorCamp. This trail goes to Silica Springs. For a shorter walk, there is no need to keep walking, you can return back to the carpark the same way.
From a seat beside the boardwalk on the track to Silica Springs you can rest your legs and take in a panoramic view of Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu. The cone-shaped mountain is Ngauruhoe and the larger mountain above the bushline is Ruapehu. Both mountains are active volcanoes.
Ruapehu's volcanic alert level is monitored by GeoNet and raised when the crater lake temperatures rise. GeoNet issues a reminder that eruptions can occur with little or no warning. So it pays to check the situation at the Visitor Centre before you go trekking on the mountain trails. Wear suitable clothing and shoes for mountain walks.
