Long Description:
The High Peak Estate is part of the Dark Peak area of the Peak District National Park.

"The Dark Peak is famed for its desolate and exposed tracts of moorland top, and the open undulating high gritstone plateau with extensive blanket peat covered by cottongrass bog and heather moorland. Below the moorland, steep-sided cloughs may be lined with relict areas of oak-birch woodlands. Some of the steep valley slopes have been planted with interlocking blocks of coniferous and mixed plantation woodland while others support acid grassland." link

This area of land owned by the National Trust is actively managed by them to minimise erosion and and improve water retention by reducing water run off.

The southern edge of the land is crossed by the Pennine Bridleway, and this waymark is at the point that the path meets this boundary marker. The High Peak Estate is an open access area with a height of 432 metres at this point. Good strong footwear is a necessity and a reasonable level of fitness is required.

"The Pennine Bridleway offers horse riders, cyclists and walkers the opportunity to explore 205 miles of the Pennines' ancient packhorse routes, drovers roads and newly created bridleways." link It provides a convenient rout to access the High Peak Estate with a car park at the nearby town of Hayfield.
