On January 25, 1990, a violent storm raged in Noordwijk, which later even turned into a hurricane. The fire brigade is cleaning up storm damage.
Then there is a fire alarm from Hotel Huis ter Duin. There is a fire in the kitchen on the first floor. In the first instance it seems that this can be brought under control. But soon it becomes a fierce, uncontrollable fire.
The first team that went inside can escape death, the second team is locked in by the flames and three firefighters never return to the fire station.
The monument is made of twisted steel beams from the hotel.
It stands in front of the fire station. Every year a memorial takes place at the monument for Nico Steenvoorden, Jan de Ridder and Gerrit Heeringa
The text on the sign says:
In memory of the three Noordwijk firefighters who died in a major fire during a severe storm on January 25, 1990.
