The Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is named after a University of Connecticut alumnus of the class of 1943 and longtime philanthropist.
It is a 10,167-seat multi-purpose arena was built from 1987 to 1990 as the home of the UConn legendary basketball program. It is the largest on-campus basketball arena in the northeast.
The 171,000 sq ft building, designed by the S/L/A/M Collaborative, is constructed by placing a 310' diameter geodesic dome roof on a reinforced concrete plinth. Within the building are the basketball courts, arena seating, and service areas. The stadium was originally built with a capacity of 8,241 and as the success of the University basketball program grew it was expanded to its present capacity 10,167. In 2017 the arena was updated with a new roof to cover its more than 171,000 square feet of area.
