Title: Train of Thought

The artist explains his non-integrated piece this way: “There is an interesting phenomenon that happens between people when brief glances take place as you walk by strangers. Sometimes a person is deep in thought, or on their phone, but a micro expression will be exchanged... That fleeting body language is something that happens unconsciously and yet it lies at the very base of our human connection with one another. The concourse corridor at uOttawa Station is the pedestrian tunnel where people pass each other all day long. My concept is to introduce an artwork that echoes the fleeting encounters we have with one another by situating 37 large-scale portraits based on cross-sections of people who frequent the university environment. These portraits will be purposefully taken out-of-focus so they "remind" us of people we might know but who remain elusive. Each face will contain a single word in either French or English that floats up between the artwork and the viewer. These words will be directed towards the viewer as potential reflections of the things going on in their individual lives, and so might resonate within their private thought patterns as they walk through the concourse.
The faces in the black and white portraits will also appear to change their gaze, following the viewer at the same pace in which they are walking through the tunnel. This will create a flow/momentum between the portraits and the people, like a conversation.
The artwork becomes a mirror of the various people who use the site and invites possibilities of interpretations of what people are thinking behind their faces when they look at you...”
Artist’s biography
Derek Michael Besant is a Professor in Visual Arts at The Alberta College of Art + Design. His research working with the University of Alberta Health Law Department and the Stem Cell Research Foundation in Ottawa is directed at how the brain "sees." This artwork will utilize advanced technology to create optical encounters that will involve passing pedestrians. He lived in Ottawa as a child and has strong memories from that experience. This artwork contains and constructs a kind of remembrance of how we assemble what we know in our brains. That experience is not always clear, but invites us to construct our individual identity around it, which is what the artwork strives to do among perfect strangers.

L’article donne l’explication suivante à propos de son œuvre non intégrée : « Un phénomène intéressant se produit lorsque deux inconnus se croisent du regard en marchant. Une personne peut être dans une profonde réflexion ou en train d’utiliser son téléphone, mais une micro-expression est échangée… Ce langage corporel éphémère est exprimé inconsciemment, mais se situe à la base même des rapports entre humains. Le couloir de la salle des pas perdus de la station uOttawa est un tunnel piétonnier où des gens se croisent tout au long de la journée. Mon concept vise à introduire une création artistique qui fait écho aux rencontres éphémères que nous vivons. Ainsi, 37 portraits à grande échelle représentant divers profils de personnes qui fréquentent l’environnement de l’université seront intégrés à l’environnement. Ces portraits seront volontairement flous; ils évoqueront ainsi des gens que nous pourrions connaître tout en demeurant élusifs. Sur chaque visage sera imprimé un mot unique, en français ou en anglais, qui semblera flotter entre l’œuvre et le spectateur. Ces mots flotteront vers les observateurs comme autant de réflexions capables d’évoquer ce qui se passe dans leur vie personnelle, voire de refléter les pensées intimes qui les habiteront lorsqu’ils traverseront la salle.
Les sujets représentés en noir et blanc sembleront également suivre du regard les passants qui déambuleront dans le tunnel. Cet effet créera une dynamique entre les portraits et les gens, comme le ferait une conversation.
L’œuvre d’art agira comme un miroir pour toutes les personnes qui circuleront dans la station et évoquera les diverses interprétations de la pensée des gens qui se cachent derrière un masque pendant qu’ils vous regardent... »
Biographie de l’artiste
Derek Michael Besant est professeur d’arts visuels au Alberta College of Art and Design. Ses recherches en collaboration avec le département du droit de la santé de l’Université de l’Alberta et avec la Fondation canadienne des cellules souches à Ottawa visent à comprendre comment le cerveau interprète la réalité. Cette œuvre d’art mettra à profit des technologies de pointe pour créer des rencontres optiques avec les passants. L’artiste a vécu à Ottawa pendant son enfance et il garde des souvenirs marquants de cette expérience. Cette création présente et construit des souvenirs en quelque sorte, tout comme nous le faisons lorsque nous assemblons des éléments de notre réalité dans notre cerveau. L’expérience n’est pas toujours limpide, mais nous cherchons à nous en imprégner pour construire notre identité personnelle, ce que l’œuvre tente de faire en créant un lien entre de parfaits étrangers.
