CHILHAM Church hosted the first awards ceremony celebrating the management of churchyards and cemeteries in Kent.

The Kent God’s Acre Project attracted entries from across the county and winners gathered last Saturday to receive their awards.

Winners included St Peter’s churchyard in Bekesbourne which won the Churchyard Interpretation award and St Leonard, Leaveland, near Faversham, which was awarded the Community Involvement prize.

The Rev Caroline Pinchbeck said: “The project recognises churchyards and cemeteries as significant areas for flora, fauna and social history and seeks to provide advice and guidance for their management.”"
