Virgin Mary was a 1st-century BC Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth, and the mother of Jesus, according to the New Testament and the Quran.
The gospels of Matthew and Luke in the New Testament and the Quran describe Mary as a virgin; according to Christian theology she conceived Jesus through the Holy Spirit while still a virgin. The miraculous conception took place when she was already betrothed to Joseph. She accompanied Joseph to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.
The Gospel of Luke begins its account of Mary's life with the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and announced her divine selection to be the mother of Jesus. According to canonical gospel accounts, Mary was present at the crucifixion and is depicted as a member of the early Christian community in Jerusalem. According to Catholic and Orthodox teachings, at the end of her earthly life her body was raised directly into Heaven; this is known in the Christian West as the Assumption.

Maria nebo Marie, také Panna Maria je v krestanství a islámu matka Ježíše z Nazareta, snoubenka tesare Josefa.
Immaculata nebo poceštene Imakuláta, cesky Neposkvrnená nebo bez poskvrny je prízvisko a typ zobrazení Panny Marie ve výtvarném umení. Je to zkrácený výraz immaculata conceptio, cesky neposkvrnené pocetí, který odkazuje na dogma o Neposkvrneném pocetí Panny Marie v lune její matky (dle apokryfu svaté Anny), tedy netýká se pocetí Ježíše Krista.
Abstraktní teologické téma zobrazení madony se casteji vyskytuje od 16. století. Puvodne se zobrazovala stojící ci klecící pred Bohem Otcem a s diskutujícími slavnými teology, rešícími otázku neposkvrneného pocetí. Panna Marie byla vnímána jako druhá Eva, na kterou se vyskytují ve výtvarném zobrazení narážky, zejména stojí na hadu (príp. drakovi), jehož hlavu má rozdrtit její síme – tedy symbolické predurcení Krista, který porazí Satana. Další atributy (opatrené latinskými texty) bývají cerpány z Písne písní, kde je Marie prirovnávána k Šulamítce. Napr. flos campi (kvítek šaronský), turris David (vež Davidova), speculum sine macula (nezkalené zrcadlo), palma.
