Nelia Gardner White was born in Andrews Settlement, PA on 1 November 1, 1894. She attended Syracuse University (1911-13) and the Emma Willard Kindergarten School (1913-15) and became a kindergarten teacher.

During World War II, she wrote articles about England for the British Ministry of Information. Her novel No Trumpet Before Him won an $8,000 prize in the Westminster Press Fiction Contest. She began writing fictional stories for kindergarten children, then four novels for young people, and finally adult fiction. She also wrote hundreds of magazine stories for such publications as: the American, Ladies' Home Journal, People's Home Journal, Midland, McCall's, Pictorial Review, Forum, and Good Housekeeping.
