Milford was a small farming community founded in 1873. In 1875 a major vein of silver ore was discovered just west of town and the town boomed. To help move the ore to market the Utah Central Railroad was extended into town in 1880. Union Pacific was a major shareholder in the Utah Central and took over operations. The line was extended to Los Angeles and Milford was a major point for the movement of freight and passengers. Passenger service has been eliminated but freight continues to move on the line. Coal is shipped to Los Angeles and then on to China and a major pork production facility also ships out of Milford.
