source Chateau Fort:
From the top of its rocky peak, the castle dominates the city of Lourdes and offers a panorama of the Marian Sanctuary and the Pyrenees. The history of this castle lacks documentary sources because of the many destructive sieges that the city of Lourdes experienced in 1374 and 1573. The majority of the archives were then scattered and burned.
The architectural study, during the classification in 1995 among the Historical Monuments, confirms the exceptional military interest of this castle. He is the witness of the evolution of the Pyrenean foothills fortifications from the 11th to the 19th century.
Its vocation of defense of the population and lock of the commercial routes, in particular towards Spain, allowed him to develop a set of defensive elements and attack still visible today: dungeon, drawbridge, portcullis, watchtowers, enclosures and artillery platform.

With the tower of Garnavie, also known as the Guigne Tower, the old watchtower of the city walls, the castle remains the last defensive remnant of Lourdes, fortified city in the Middle Ages. Its walls tell its story.

source Chateau Fort :
