Lourdes: Magnificent Patriotic Ceremony for the National Day of Honoring the Dead for France in Indochina

This Thursday, June 13 at 18h, at the square of the Military Medal, was held a magnificent and moving patriotic ceremony on the occasion of the National Day of homage to the dead for France in Indochina, under the chairmanship of the Sub-Prefect Sonia Penela, in the presence of Mayor Josette Bourdeu, Deputy Mayor Madeleine Navarro, Municipal Councilor Annick Baleri, Departmental Councilor Bruno Vinualès, Presidents of Veterans Associations and Patriotic Associations, representatives of 1st Regiment of Hussars Paratroopers and the 35thRAP of Tarbes, many former Legionnaires, representatives of the National Police and Firefighters and a large public.

Colonel Daniel Lavigne opened the ceremony, explaining the unfolding of the ceremony and what was the Indochina War.

Then a student from Sarsan College read an anonymous poem by a soldier who participated in the Battle of Dien-Bien-Phu.

Subprefect Sonia Penela then read the official message from Geneviève Darrieussecq, the Secretary of State to the Minister of Armies. (see this one at the bottom of the article)

Four former soldiers who fought in Indochina (General Pierre Latanne, Chief Warrant Officer Messager, Chief Warrant Officer Dartois and Corporal Skimanek) laid land of Dien-Bien-Phu on the support points of Dien Bien Phu.

Representatives of the chiefs of the 35th RAP (regiment which at the time was in Dien-Bien-Phu) and the 1st RHP covered this land with a tribute plate made by the Voldoire establishments.

Then the sub-prefect laid a wreath together with the young schoolboy from Sarsan who had read the poem, then it was the turn of the Mayor, also accompanied by 2 Primary students and finally two former Chief Warrant Officers who were in charge. Indochina laid a wreath together with several children.

After the bell to the Dead and the Minute of silence, the Marseillaise was interpreted by the Music Union Lourdaise and sung by all the participants while rose in the sky pigeons of the Entente pigeon.

Then the civil authorities greeted the Piquet of Honor, the Flag Bearers and the representatives of the veterans and patriotic associations.

A Vin d'honneur was given at the "Café de la Gare".


Message from Geneviève Darrieussecq

"Memory is a cement for our Nation. It unites us and brings us together. It binds the generations.

In this national memory, there is no "forgotten war". Thus, today, France bows respectfully to the veterans of Indochina. The Nation pays tribute to those who shed their blood for France in Indochina. Fighting 1940 and 1945 against Japanese troops until the dissolution in 1956 of the "French Expeditionary Force in the Far East", they fought valiantly for our country.

On June 8, France, through the voice of the head of government, paid them a large tribute in the courtyard of the Hôtel National des Invalides. The Prime Minister has reaffirmed the recognition of the Nation to the dead for France and all combatants of wars in Indochina.

Far from the metropolis, sometimes in indifference or misunderstanding, nearly 110,000 soldiers of the former French Union fell in Indochina and nearly 80,000 were wounded. Tens of thousands of men have suffered a grueling and deadly captivity.

In this painful story, faced with a resolute adversary, sailors, airmen and ground troops have fulfilled their duty. Our soldiers have worn our colors in difficult conditions and in fights marked by the harshness of a war of decolonization.

Sixty-five years ago, the Geneva Accords marked the end of the Indochina War. Time does not erase the value and dignity of the brave.

Today, in all departments, Indochina soldiers occupy their place in the history of France alongside all generations of fire.

They will remain in our memories.

This work of memory is a base on which France and Vietnam build the peace of today and deepen their relations ".

Ce jeudi 13 juin à 18h, au square de la Médaille Militaire, a eu lieu une magnifique et émouvante cérémonie patriotique à l’occasion de la Journée nationale d’hommage aux morts pour la France en Indochine, sous la présidence de la Sous-préfète Sonia Penela, en présence du Maire Josette Bourdeu, du Maire-adjoint aux Anciens combattants Madeleine Navarro, de la Conseillère municipale Annick Baleri, du Conseiller départemental Bruno Vinualès, des Présidents des associations d’anciens combattants et d’associations patriotiques, des représentants du 1er Régiment d’Hussards Parachutistes et du 35èmeRAP de Tarbes, de nombreux anciens Légionnaires, des représentants de la Police nationale et des Pompiers et d’un nombreux public.

Le colonel Daniel Lavigne a ouvert la cérémonie, en expliquant le déroulement de la cérémonie et ce que fut la Guerre d’Indochine.

Puis un élève du collège de Sarsan a lu un poème anonyme d’un soldat qui participa à la bataille de Dien-Bien-Phu.

La Sous-préfète Sonia Penela a lu ensuite le message officiel de Geneviève Darrieussecq, la secrétaire d’État auprès de la ministre des Armées. (voir celui-ci au bas de l’article)

Quatre anciens militaires ayant combattu en Indochine (le Général Pierre Latanne, l’Adjudant-chef Messager, l’Adjudant-chef Dartois et le Caporal Skimanek) ont déposé de la terre de Dien-Bien-Phu prise sur les points d’appui de Dien-Bien-Phu.

Les représentants des chefs de corps du 35ème RAP (régiment qui à l’époque était à Dien-Bien-Phu) et du 1er RHP ont recouvert cette terre d’une plaque-hommage réalisée par les établissements Voldoire.

Puis Mme la Sous-préfète a déposé une gerbe accompagnée du jeune collégien de Sarsan qui avait lu le poème, puis ce fut le tour de Mme le Maire elle aussi accompagnée de 2 élèves du Primaire et pour finir deux anciens Adjudants-chefs qui étaient en Indochine ont déposé une gerbe accompagnés de plusieurs enfants.

Après la sonnerie aux Morts et la Minute de silence, la Marseillaise a été interprétée par l’Union Musicale Lourdaise et chantée par tous les participants tandis que s’élevaient dans le ciel les pigeons de l’Entente colombophile.

Puis les autorités civiles ont salué le Piquet d’honneur, les Porte-drapeaux et les représentants des associations d’anciens combattants et patriotiques.

Un Vin d’honneur a été donné au « Café de la Gare ».


Message de Geneviève Darrieussecq

« La mémoire est un ciment pour notre Nation. Elle nous unit et nous rassemble. Elle lie les générations.

Dans cette mémoire nationale, il n’y a pas de « guerre oubliée ». Ainsi, aujourd’hui, la France s’incline avec respect devant les anciens combattants d’Indochine. La Nation rend hommage à ceux qui ont versé leur sang pour la France en Indochine. Des combats de 1940 et de 1945 contre les troupes japonaises jusqu’à la dissolution en 1956 du « corps expéditionnaire français en Extrême-Orient », ils ont combattu vaillamment pour notre pays.

Le 8 juin, la France, par la voix du chef du Gouvernement, leur a rendu un large hommage dans la cour d’honneur de l’Hôtel national des Invalides. Le Premier ministre a affirmé une nouvelle fois la reconnaissance de la Nation aux morts pour la France et à tous les combattants des guerres en Indochine.

Très loin de la métropole, parfois dans l’indifférence ou dans l’incompréhension, près de 110 000 soldats de l’ex-Union française sont tombés en Indochine et près de 80 000 ont été blessés. Des dizaines de milliers d’hommes ont subi une éprouvante et meurtrière captivité.

Dans cette histoire douloureuse, face à un adversaire résolu, marins, aviateurs et troupes au sol ont rempli leur devoir. Nos soldats ont porté nos couleurs dans des conditions difficiles et dans des combats marqués par l’âpreté d’une guerre de décolonisation.

Il y a 65 ans, les accords de Genève marquaient la fin de la guerre d’Indochine. Le temps n’efface pas la valeur et la dignité des braves.

Aujourd’hui, dans tous les départements, les soldats d’Indochine occupent leur place dans l’Histoire de France aux côtés de toutes les générations du feu.

Ils resteront dans nos mémoires.

Ce travail de mémoire est un socle sur lequel la France et le Vietnam construisent la paix d’aujourd’hui et approfondissent leurs relations ».
