This is the southern portal of the Tunnel de Mont-de-Billy on the Canal l'Aisne à la Marne.
This tunnel is at the summit of this canal and is 2.3 kilometres long. It took 17 years to build.
A rail track runs alongside the canal throughout the length. A traction engine used to run on the track and tow boats through until 1970 when ventilation was added and boats were allowed to pass through on their own.
It is lit throughout and is one-way controlled by traffic lights at each entrance.
Telephones have been installed every 300 metres in case of emergency.
