Norman cross-head & Font - St Martin of Tours - Lyndon, Rutland - Romanesque Architecture on Waymarking.com

Part of a Norman Cross-head and font in St Martin of Tours' church, Lyndon.

The cross-head was discovered in 1904 during the demolition of a a house in the village; it had been built up in the wall. Believed to be part of the old village cross, shown on old maps of 1663 which probably stood on the green near Luffenham Road, but later ascribed as part of a finial cross from the church, probably Transitional Norman, circa 1130.

The font is also of the Norman period -
"The font now used was found buried in the churchyard in 1866. It is of 12th-century date, in the form of a capital, square at the top and circular below, the angles and each face of the upper part somewhat rudely carved with scrolled undulating and other ornament, and animals of archaic character on two of the sides. The bowl rests on modern supports. A discarded 18th-century baluster font is now in the churchyard."
