He was born on May 16, 1846 in Philadelphia. He died on June 6, 1919 in Philadelphia. He was originally buried in American Mechanics Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA. The cemetery was closed and he was re-interred on September 13, 1951 in Philadelphia Memorial Park. Marked only with a small stone that gave his last name only, his grave went virtually unnoticed until rediscovered in 2002 and at that time a Medal of Honor marker was placed on his grave. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: WRAY, WILLIAM J.
