NOTE: About 1.5 miles east of Cement on Highway 277, turn south on County Street 2740. Turn west at the coordinates of N34 55.529 W98 06.641 Follow the dirt road a few hundred feet and turn south on a dirt path. It is easy to spot once you turn onto CS 2470.
Buzzards Roost is a knoll about 50-60 ft. high projecting up from the surrounding flatlands. The grass-covered knoll has a path up the north side which appears to have been made by some daredevil ATV rider. Atop the knoll is a group of rocks tumbled together and eroded with the strong Oklahoma winds. On the east side of this formation is a natural arch estimated to be maybe 4 ft. high and 7 feet wide, although it is difficult to determine. One of our team grew up nearby and as a kid always wanted to climb this formation. During our visit, 65 year later, he checked off that item on his Bucket List.
The fascinating thing about this location, however, is that it was a known outlaw hideout of Frank and Jesse James. We did not see any evidence, but the story is that in the 1870's these outlaws carved signs and symbols on the rocks, to remind them where they'd hidden caches of money, ammunition, maps and gold. The locals believe there are still treasures to be found. An Oklahoman newspaper article from 2009 indicates that in the 1930s, treasure hunter Joe Hunter unearthed a tea kettle near this formation which contained a watch, treasure map, ring and some gold and coins.
This was a fun discovery, and definitely a place to visit if you are in this part of south central Oklahoma
