The grave of Clarence Hawkes is marked by a 6' high, granite, pointed arch shaped headstone. The front of the headstone contains a triangular floral design and is inscribed HAWKES. The back of the headstone is inscribed:

Despite his physical disabilities, Clarence Hawkes became a prominent naturalist and a prolific author and poet. His leg was partially amputated when he was nine and four years later he became blind from a gun shot he received during a hunting accident.

He was educated at the Perkins School for the Blind in Boston, MA. In 1899 he married Bessie Bell. He published a book of poetry Pebbles and Shells: Verses in 1895. He published over 100 books during his life, including:
