"The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Bomb Squad responded to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse on Friday to investigate a report of a suspicious package.

At around 9 a.m., a visitor alerted a bailiff about a suspicious packaged inside the courthouse. The bailiff contacted the sheriff's office and hundreds of people were immediately evactuated.

At around 10 a.m., the bomb squad entered the building and by 10:50 a.m. they remained on scene.

Deputies asked people to avoid the area until it was deemed safe. By 11:45 a.m. the scene was declared all clear.

People at the courthouse looking to get married were able to have their ceremony but were unable to take photos throughout the courthouse area.

The suspicious package turned out to be a messenger bag left behind by a man in the area. When the man realized what had happened, he contacted deputies and the scene was cleared.

Sheriff's officials said this is an important reminder not to leave things unattended as incidents like this can happen. It's also a good idea to report things that appear unsafe." (visit link)
