The Erfurt City and Regional Library is the largest public library in Thuringia. Its stock of approx. 480,000 media (of which approx. 270,000 are magazines) is distributed among the main library on Domplatz, eight branch offices and the mobile library.
With a stock of 3000 volumes, the Erfurt Public Library was opened on October 3, 1897 as the second major library of the city of Erfurt. With the exception of the time of the First World War, steadily increasing numbers of users made it possible to continually expand their holdings and to open branch offices in the districts of Erfurt. The National Socialist cultural policy and the Second World War represented another cut in the history of the library. It was not until September 1946 that it was possible to switch over to regular lending. In 1956 a bookbinding and repair workshop was founded. In 1957, the newly created music library made it possible to lend vinyl records. In 1969 the Volksbücherei and the scientific library were merged to form the "Erfurt Academic Library". Since 1976 pictures can be borrowed in the so-called Artothek. In 1990, the loan of CDs was added, 1993, the video store was opened. In 1997, the Erfurt Academic Library was renamed "Erfurt City and Regional Library" - shortly before its centenary.
