Far and away the smallest of the switchers, this General Electric built unit uses a combination of electric motors and chains for the final drive. This configuration was used in at least one larger switcher by General Electric, their 45 Tonner. Power comes from a 150 horsepower 6 cylinder Cummins engine, probably the 855 cubic inch line. A total of 510 25 Tonners were produced by G.E. from 1941, or 1938, to 1974. This unit, restored and repainted, looks like new.
The text from the museum, below, describes the drive system as "transferring to the axles through gears and then with chains to the axles". It appears that this is incorrect, an electric motor driving one axle, with chains from that axle driving the second axle.
Louisiana Pacific 29365 25 Ton
Built by General Electric in April of 1948, this 25 ton yard switcher was originally owned by Diamond Match, a southern mining company. LP purchased the locomotive and moved it to their pulp mill in Perry which is 10 miles east of Chetwynd, BC. LP donated the little locomotive to the museum in the fall of 1997. Special item to note on this locomotive is the drive system. The power is transferred to the axles through gears and then with chains to the axles.
