En 1580, Bernard Palissy eu le projet d’une fontaine pour alimenter Brouage en eau potable. Située près de l’église d’Hiers, la fontaine d'Hiers ne fut réalisée qu’en 1618.
Ce réservoir accumulait l’eau des sources alentour qui s’écoulait dans des canalisations en plomb jusqu'à Brouage. En 1633, on décida de construire des regards tous les 200 mètres pour en assurer l’entretien.
Ce système fonctionna jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle

In 1580, Bernard Palissy had the project of a fountain to supply Brouage with drinking water. Located near the church of Hiers, the fountain of Hiers was not realized until 1618.
This reservoir accumulated the water from the surrounding springs which flowed in lead pipes to Brouage. In 1633, it was decided to construct glances every 200 meters to ensure maintenance.
This system worked until the eighteenth century.
