The Discovery Trail is a unique example of the conversion of an old railway line into an arboretum with nearly 1,800 registered trees and shrubs (including 250 rosebushes).

A discovery of the city through its plant heritage
For more than six kilometers, discover the fantastic world of hardwoods of the five continents, their origin, their utility and their diversity. During your visit, you will discover a multitude of leaves with unexpected shapes, as well as flowers and surprising fruits. A grove will reveal the amazing peculiarities of the barks, a "Garden of water, Jardin d'Orties", designed by landscape gardener Gilles Clément, will present the role of purifying plants.

The landscape views of the "Little City of Character" will accompany your discovery on this very surprising nature trail.

How to visit
Access to the Discovery Trail is free and free, but you can benefit from a guided tour by reservation from the gardener-host of the city of Melle (05 49 27 56 88; arboretum [at] ville-melle.fr ).

For school children, activities are adapted to the level of education of children. For them, the visit can be animated around a treasure hunt that allows you to discover the diversity of the plant world and develop the sense of observation. Other animations (herbaria, cuttings, etc ...) can be proposed according to the number of children and the season. Le Chemin de la Découverte est un exemple unique de reconversion d’une ancienne voie ferrée en arboretum avec près de 1800 arbres et arbustes recensés (dont 250 rosiers).

Une découverte de la ville à travers son patrimoine végétal
Sur plus de six kilomètres, venez découvrir le monde fantastique des feuillus des cinq continents, leur origine, leur utilité et leur diversité. Au fil de votre visite, vous découvrirez une multitude de feuilles aux formes inattendues, ainsi que des fleurs et des fruits surprenants. Un bosquet vous dévoilera les particularités étonnantes des écorces, un « Jardin d’eau, Jardin d’Orties », conçu par le jardinier paysagiste Gilles Clément, vous présentera le rôle épurateur des plantes.

Les vues paysagères sur la « Petite Cité de Caractère » accompagneront votre découverte sur ce chemin de nature très surprenant.

Comment visiter
L’accès au Chemin de la découverte est libre et gratuit, mais vous pouvez bénéficier d’une visite guidée sur réservation auprès du jardinier-animateur de la ville de Melle (05 49 27 56 88 ; arboretum[at]ville-melle.fr).

Pour les scolaires, des animations sont adaptées au niveau d’études des enfants. Pour eux, la visite peut être animée autour d’un jeu de piste qui permet de découvrir la diversité du monde végétal et de développer le sens de l’observation. D’autres animations (herbiers, boutures, etc...) peuvent être proposées selon le nombre d’enfants et la saison.
