"VIRGIL was formed from Homer, April 3, 1804, and named in honor of the distinguished Roman poet. It was number 24 of the Military Townships."
In 1869 it had "three churches, a hotel, a marble shop, several stores and mechanic shops, and between 200 and 300 inhabitants...Considerable interest was manifest at an early day in the cause of education. The “Virgil Library” was established in 1807, and another under the name of the “Virgil Union Library” in 1814...The first school house was erected in 1799, and the first teacher was Charles Joyce."
