The Royal Library (Det Kongelige Bibliotek) is part of the University of Copenhagen and the national library system of Denmark. Commonly called the Black Diamond, it was designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen. The polished black granite structure was completed in 1999 as the first in a series of large cultural buildings along Copenhagen's waterfront which includes the Royal Opera House and the Royal Theater. The library also has several public facilities, including a the Queen's Hall, a 600 seat auditorium and exhibition spaces, a bookshop, a restaurant, a café and a roof terrace. The National Museum of Photography and a small museum dedicated to cartoon art are also housed in the Black Diamond.
