Garrett County Airport is a general aviation airport in western Maryland. It has a single, 5,000-foot runway which is staffed from 8:00am - 6:00pm daily and is open 24/7. The facility is officially named - Lt. Col. Robert "Bob" E. Railey USAF DCANG Terminal.
From a small grass airstrip in the 1940’s to a current modern day general aviation airport, it is now easier to fly in and out of Garrett County, thanks to the lengthening of the runway to 5,000 feet and the associated improvements. Garrett County Airport is a public-use general aviation airport located between the small towns of Accident and McHenry, Maryland with nearby Deep Creek Lake and its many resorts. The airport’s primary use is for recreational and business activities, providing resources such as flight school and sightseeing flights highlighting Deep Creek Lake. The airport supports the military, law enforcement, Department of Natural Resources and Civil Air Patrol. The Garrett County Airport’s recreational uses are for Deep Creek Lake tourism, hunting, fishing, white water rafting and recreational flying. When flying into Western Maryland you will encounter a charming bit of serendipity of the small towns within Garrett County. The beautiful county and its distinctive four seasons draw tourism year-round and a newly upgraded airport should help fuel the traffic and meet the needs of the escalating air traffic.

Airport 2G4 has one runway 270 and 090, 75 feet wide with PAPI’s and REIL’s. Employees of the Garrett County Government operate Garrett County Airport. Services provided at the airport include; Jet A with additives, 100 LL, oil, 18 tie down spaces for transit aircrafts, pilot supplies, internet weather service, phone and rental car services [upon request].
Beside the front desk inside the main building is a display consisting of a framed color photograph and a framed dedication introducing the person for whom the facility is named:
Lt. Col. Robert “Bob” E. Railey
Born and raised in McHenry, Maryland, Bob graduated from Accident High School and at the age of 18 enlisted in the United States Air Force. Twenty years later he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a 100 mission Korean War veteran, Director of Operations in more than one unit and long-time Squadron Commander of the 121st Tactical Fighter Squadron of the D.C. Air National Guard. Bob earned numerous air medals and commendations during his combat days flying the F86 and F100 including the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Bob retired at Deep Creek Lake with his wife Vava. He was a long-time member of the Garrett County Airport Advisory Board which was involved in the planning of this facility.
Bob was a well-known, gregarious individual who left an impact on all who knew him.
