Trommel The Trommelis a machine used to separate the gold from rock, gravel, and sand. This particular unit is an upgrade model with steel "fingers" inside that grind and pulverize the ore.to separate the gold The raw ore is placed into the hopper on the back of the trommell, along with a steady spray of water. The ore and water then pass through the barrel as it turns. The ore stays in the barrel of the trommel until it spills over in through the screens. The larger ore falls onto the ground, while the smaller ore flows along with the water to the sluice box or mechanical gold pans.

A sluice box is essentially a man made channel with rifles set in the bottom. The rifles are designed to create dead zones in the current to allow gold to drop out of suspension.
