The marker is located alongside the north side of Shawan Road, just west of the I-83 interchange.
it tells a brief history of the nearby property, onve the Hayfields farm, as Colonel Nicholas Merryman Bosley, he original owner, prided himself in his Timothy hay crops. The farm was later used for cattle as well. It remained in operation until the mid 1960's. Today, it is home to the Hayfields Country Club. The original farmhouse and 5 other pre-18th century outbuildings survive, and are in use by the Club.
Marker text reads:
Colonel Nicholas Merryman Bosley, builder, 1810, awarded silver tankard “by the hand of Lafayette” for best cultivated Maryland farm, 1824. Also home of John Merryman, early importer, 1848, of registered Hereford cattle, still, 1967, bred here. His imprisonment, 1861, led to Chief Justice Taney’s masterful “Ex-Parte Merryman.”
