This log chapel is located in Saint James Cemetery in Crossingville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Crossingville was one of the earliest settlements of Catholics in northwestern Pennsylvania. As Msgr. Robert Barcio noted in Cathedral in the Wilderness, his book about the early history of the Diocese of Erie, a Mass was celebrated at Crossingville as early as 1798. The original church building was a log structure, which was later replaced by a larger church in the mid-1800s, St. Philip Church, which still stands today not far from the cemetery. Saint James Cemetery has been the Catholic cemetery for this area since those early days. The log chapel that stands here today is a recreation of the original log church that served the area. It is built to the same dimensions as the original structure, and is used today as the cemetery chapel for burial services. St. James Cemetery is the burial site of many local Catholics, including numerous veterans, and the famous radio actor John Frederick "Fred" McCarthy, who played Tonto on the Lone Ranger radio program.
