Die Alfelder Lateinschule wurde 1610-12 erbaut und ist mit einem reichen Bild- und Architekturschmuck ein herausragendes Beispiel der Weserrenaissance.
Das zweigeschossige Gebäude mit Satteldach steht auf einem Sandsteinunterbau. Das Gefach ist aus roten Ziegeln und unverputzt, die Fachwerkbohlen verlaufen ausschließlich senkrecht und waagerecht. Sämtliche Holzflächen und -streben sind mit Schrift- und Bildschnitzerei verziert und farbig gefaßt. Der Architekturschmuck entfaltet das Weltbild und den Bildungskanon der Erbauungszeit. In querrechteckigen Reliefbildern sind über 100 allegorische, mythische und historische Figuren dargestellt, die alle Dimensionen des Humanen repräsentieren sollen: Sinne und Künste, Moral und Tugenden, Wissenschaften und Glaube. Als Baumeister und Bildschnitzer wird Andreas Steiger aus Hildesheim genannt.
Als Lateinschule diente die Lehranstalt vor allem der Ausbildung künftiger Geistlicher, Rechtsgelehrter und Ärzte. Im 19. Jahrhundert beherbergte das Haus ein Lehrerseminar, seit 1928 befindet sich in ihm das Alfelder Stadtmuseum.

The two-storey building with a saddle roof stands on a sandstone substructure. The compartment is made of red bricks and unplastered, the half-timbered planks run exclusively vertically and horizontally. All wooden surfaces and struts are decorated with text and picture carvings and painted. The architectural decoration unfolds the world view and the educational canon of the time of construction. More than 100 allegorical, mythical and historical figures, representing all dimensions of the human, are depicted in cross-rectangular relief pictures: Senses and arts, morals and virtues, sciences and faith. Andreas Steiger from Hildesheim is named as the master builder and carver.
As a Latin school, the school was primarily used to train future clergymen, legal scholars and doctors. In the 19th century the building housed a teacher training college, and since 1928 it has housed the Alfeld City Museum.
