The fountain consists of four small circular basins, surrounding the base of the obelisk, each adorned with a stone lion on a base shaped like a step pyramid. The water gushes from the mouths of the four lions and pours into the basins. It was added to the obelisk by Giuseppe Valadier in 1823.
The Flaminio obelisk is one of the thirteen ancient obelisks of Rome. It has a height of 25.90 m, and with the base and the cross it reaches 36.50 m. Probably demolished during the barbarian invasions, it was found in 1587, broken into three pieces together with the Lateran obelisk, and erected again by order of Pope Sixtus V by Domenico Fontana in 1589.
