North Cliffs Mine is first documented by returns from mineral dues between 1823 and 1825. It appears to have ceased operations until 1844 when the venture was re-started on a more ambitious scale. It worked until at least 1848. The mine's cost book is preserved at Cornwall Record Office (ref. DDX 9).

The sett of North Cliffs Mine was granted by Lady Basset of Tehidy to John Rule and partners, the limits of the sett being "from the point of land which projects into the sea to the northward of Pencobben farm house [Knavocks Point]... east to within 200 fathoms of Tehidy Western Lodge Gate near Green Bank Cliff" [Tehidy Western Lodge lay adjacent to the parish boundary on Reskajeage Down]. This sett was granted on condition from Lady Basset that no disturbance of land was made inland from the cliffs, so the mine was worked almost entirely from levels cut in the cliff sides or shafts made in the cliff slope. The 1844 mine plan (at South Crofty Plc., Camborne) reveals that the major workings were concentrated around Fishing, Students and Purbein Cove/Red Cliff (north-east of Pencobben) and a further group of lodes around Derrick Cove, Hazil Geevur Cove and Green Bank.

Levels associated with North Cliffs Mine (and probable earlier workings) have been investigated by Professor Charles Thomas. They mainly comprise openings in the cliffs, some made by extending sea caves. Most levels are inaccessible and several are now blocked by cliff falls and roof collapses. One level in Derrick Cove has been re-used by the Camborne Sewage tunnel (see site no. 92186).

A count house for the mine may have been situated at Pencobben farmstead (Thomas, 1981) and there are traces of buildings, perhaps a crib hut or powder house, between Students Cove and Fishing Cove, and further platforms for buildings at Martin's Splat, situated above the western part of Students Cove (Thomas, c.1983).
