He was born on February 21, 1842 in Farmington, IA and died on February 24, 1918 in Des Moines, IA. He attained the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army. His Medal of Honor information and citation is: TWOMBLY, VOLTAIRE P.

Citation: Took the colors after 3 of the color guard had fallen, and although most instantly knocked down by a spent ball, immediately arose and bore the colors to the end of the engagement.
