At this place, the so-called "Onderleider", water from the Dinkel river was let into the Almelo-Nordhorn canal.
The 37.6 km long canal was dug for freight transport in the period 1886 - 1902. The canal served until 1960 and is now a narrow waterway largely grown over with reeds and other bank plants. It is only navigable to a limited extent on the German side. The level of the Dinkel is indicated here on an enamelled plate with level distribution.
The river level is based on NAP, which means Normal Amsterdam Level. 0 meters NAP is the level at the North Sea coast. The scale shows that the water is now 21.40 meters above sea level. On the scale you also can see that the maximum level is about 22.00 meters above NAP.
