General Service Wagon

Simple wooden wagons like this one carried food, ammunition, and equipment form railheads towards the trenches in long supply lines.

The Canadian expeditionary Force relied on thousands of draught and pack animals to pull wagons, artillery pieces, and carry supplies. Wagons travelled day and night to keep the troops fighting, and were often targeted by enemy fire. The Canadian firm Massey-Harris manufactured this wagon in Toronto in 1916. After the war, many of the wagons, including this one, were sold at auction to local farmers. Its British owners donated it to the Canadian War Museum in 1968.
