The Spitzingsee is located about five kilometers south of the Schliersee and a few hundred meters south of the Spitzingsattels at 1084 m altitude in the Schliersee mountains, Mangfallgebirge, Bavarian Alps. With 28.3 hectares, it is one of the largest mountain lakes in Bavaria. The sea depth is a maximum of 16.3 meters (south basin). The northern basin is up to 10.4 meters deep. The outflow is the Red Valepp, which merges with the White Valley at the Kaiserklause (Forsthaus Valepp) and flows into the Tyrol as a ground floor and finally as Brandenberger Ache into the Inn. The Spitzingsee has 7.51 km2 a comparatively large water catchment area.
