The Rutgers University mascot is the Scarlet Knight. This 8-foot tall, 9,000 pound, bronze statue stands on a granite base at the northeast border of a 25,000-square foot public green. Part of The Yard -- a redevelopment project completed in 2016 -- it is surrounded by a 14-story, U-shaped, 160-unit undergraduate apartment building with 15,000 sf of street-level retail and restaurant space.
The knight wears a full suit of medieval armor with a dark brown patina. Arm bent at the elbow, his right hand wraps around the grip of a broadsword with its tip planted beside his right foot. A scarlet "R" on the pommel faces forward. He holds the Rutgers Shield, strapped to his left forearm, across the left side of his torso. The shield's design combines five symbolic elements divided among three sections set against a scarlet background. It was introduced in 2015 to mark the school's 250th anniversary. A scarlet plume cascades from the helmet's peak to the collar in back.
A cast bronze plaque is mounted on the granite base's top by the knight's feet. It reads:
