The Strathcona neighbourhood is where for over 100 years new immigrants from around the world came to settle and establish themselves in Vancouver.
Jewish, Chinese, Ukrainian, Swedes, and more nationalities found this neighbourhood to be a multicultural experience.
In recent years the neighbourhood has changed as it faces challenges with the impoverished community that lives along Hastings Street, one block north. Strathcona started to become a community that many people ignored and the City of Vancouver wanted to bulldoze for an urban freeway network.
In the past two decades, the community has been gentrifying as younger people want to live close to the downtown core. And the First Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church is a reflection of this shift. The Swedish community left Strathcona and ultimately sold the building to a Korean gospel church. Then again it changed hands for an evangelical Christian community who continue to worship in the church today.
