From an information panel on site:
M3 Lee Tank
The Lee's unusual design reflects the urgent need to build a more powerful weapon to counter German tanks.
When the Lee was created, no American tank could carry a 75 mm gun in its turret, so the weapon was mounted on one side of the vehicle. This gave the tank a high silhouette, and the main gun's traverse (horizontal rotation) was limited. Both were weaknesses in battle, and the M4 Sherman later replaced it as the western Allies' principal medium tank. Canadians trained on M3s in the United-Kingdom, but never used them in combat.
